Swimming in the Sea of Suburbia

Well I have moved, unpacked, settled in, explored the area, and made new friends. I feel right at home in my new suburban digs. Really. I don’t fit the mold but I like it. I was the girl in school who was alternative before alternative was mainstream. I shopped at Goodwill, shaved half my head, and listened to the Dead Kennedys and the Butthole Surfers. I hung out with the skater crowd at empty swimming pools and half-pipes. So how did I get here? Uh…one little decision at a time. Yep. One little decision led to another little decision that led to another little decision that finally led to a house on a cul-de-sac in a planned community north of Atlanta. That’s how it works.

I love the terrain in this area. Every time I see the mountains in the distance my heart jumps a little. And the trees…ahhh…after living in Florida so long, I have missed trees. I have my own trees now.

I’ll post on the basement another time. I’m still gathering stuff for that area.

Anyhoo…I have never lived in a friendlier area. People are just nice here. Most people are transplants like me and are probably wondering the same thing, “How did I get here?” And you know what?

The mold is a myth.

We all have our own stories and our own journeys and our own struggles and it’s all good. The skater girl is long gone. And I’m not the the gym rat, the mommy, the sport fishing queen, the runner, the volunteer, or the wife anymore. I’m just me – open to new adventure, new people, new places, and a new way of life. I’ve jumped in to the Sea of Suburbia and the water is warm.

I really am awesome. My next post will be back to decorating! Divorce is OVER. Yay! Getting a new house soon. Moving to Georgia. Starting over. I still freak out every once in a while because I am a little scared – but for the most part I AM AWESOME!

Ben Folds Again

Life Right Now

News Flash- I am in the process of getting a divorce and it SUCKS. This is why I have been neglecting my blog. Suddenly, home decor doesn’t seem as important as it was eight months ago. I would rather have my teeth pulled than write about kitchen accessories or outdoor living spaces. I can still stomach music so maybe I will write about that today. I don’t know. It is 3:44 in the morning and I really just want to be able to sleep.

Who hasn’t seen Drew Barrymore’s Whip It ? Rent it NOW. It was good in a cult movie sense but the best part about it is the soundtrack. Go to iTunes NOW and download it. Don’t pick through the songs; splurge and buy the whole thing. Do it NOW.

Ok, Hymnal, dude – please tell me you don’t really dance with that head bounce thing going on. Surely they made you do that for the video? I don’t know – I just tried doing it myself and it kind of makes me in a better mood. Maybe I have discovered an alternative to anti-depressants – the head bounce. Try it and tell me what you think.

Yoga

I’ve been into yoga lately. I’m not a freak about it, I just like what it does to my body and how I feel afterwards. The most annoying thing about yoga is the yoga teacher. Some of them take it way too seriously. Get a grip – it is yoga. “Prahna” in this Forgetting Sarah Marshall deleted scene embodies the most annoying characteristics about yoga teachers. She is hilarious. I like the end when Jason Segel’s character says, “I’m doing a handstand motherf#@r!”.

Luckily, most of my teachers so far have been great and nothing like “Prahna”.

East Texas House Flip - Before

My uncle, Charlie Ham, is a house flipper out in Palestine, Texas. He has really great taste and a good eye for what works and what doesn’t work on a house flip. While visiting family at Thanksgiving, I got to tour his latest purchase. It is straight out of “Mad Men”. These are the “before” pictures. I can’t wait to see what he does with this house!

It sits on a 1.5 acre treed lot. This is a winter time picture, so you can imagine the yard in full bloom.

The interior is original 1950’s. Check out the vintage stove.

For a small kitchen, it has a lot of cabinet storage.

This is a neat banquette.

This wallpaper was probably the hip thing in 1955.

This is a little tv room / den. This exact paneling is in the “Mad Men” tv room.

This is a little half bath. I guess it was designed so that one could sit on the toilet and wash hands at same time?

The neighborhood is really pretty. This is the home next door.

Check out my previous post on Devendra to hear “Carmensita”. The video features once girlfriend, Natalie Portman. Devendra’s mother is Venezuelan, his father American and his name Indian. You can definitely feel the different influences in his music.

“French Navy” – Camera Obscura

Camera Obscura of Scotland is one of my new favorite bands. I don’t know anyone else that sounds like them. Their sound is retro but still relevant. This is a great song and video.

This is one of my favorite movies. I have seen it countless times. I am not a big Gwenyth Paltrow fan but I LOVE her in this movie. The whole cast is perfect – Gene Hackman, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Gwenyth Paltrow, Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller, Danny Glover, and Bill Murray.

Eli Cash and friends – I love that “Rock the Casbah” was playing in the background of this scene. Perfection.

I think it is funny how all of the characters have so much literal and figurative baggage. They all have a “look” that they carry with them throughout their lives. Margot sports the same haircut, eyeliner, barrette, and fur coat throughout the film. Chas has the red tracksuit and even passes that look on to his two kids (kind of like how we pass our emotional baggage on to our children). Richie holds on to the tennis clothes, headband, and sunglasses even though those days have long gone. Eli has the retro cowboy thing going on. It is telling. The whole movie is brilliant.

Random Dining

This is my new favorite dining room. I think the chairs are what make it so appealing. I like the color and the fabric and the shape of the chairs. Plus - they look comfy. For some reason, hard dining chairs – especially ladder back chairs – depress me. I like the combination of soft and hard in this dining room – hard floor, soft chairs, hard table, soft chandelier, hard armoire, soft curtain, hard candelabras, soft floral centerpiece.

This dining / kitchen was featured in Cottage Living magazine. I like the wooden table mixed with modern wire chairs mixed with soft upholstered end chairs. All the lines in this room are loooooooow.

This photo from Metropolitan Home magazine is cool because of the turquoise barstools. Is this not the coolest bar ever? This bar makes me want to become an alcoholic. It is PERFECT!

The next two photos are from La Dolce Vita. I like this dining space because even though it is a walk through space, it still looks finished and upscale. I love the dark gray walls in this home.

This photo is from Southern Living. These are exactly the kind of chairs that depress me! They remind me of the chairs in “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”. This chair was juuuust right! At least the end chairs are covered. I do like how they used the super, fancy, silver candelabras with the simple, rustic table and chairs. Nice combo.

This kitchen / dining area was featured in Southern Accents. The banquette is neat. I like the antlers above the range. I also like the painted wood ceiling and the narrow French doors.

Forgiveness

Today was Communion Sunday at my church. Community Church offers open communion which means that all are welcome to participate. I was thinking about the meaning of communion and realized that for me communion is about forgiveness. I heard a quote recently about forgiveness that really stuck with me. Ironically, Mark Twain, said -

“Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heel that crushed it.”

Chili

I just made the best chili ever! It is for Soup Bowl Day at school – money and awareness for homeless – kids eat soup instead of regular lunch – blah blah blah. Anyway – back to the chili. It is the BEST I have ever made. Spicy, buffalo meat, beans, tomatoes, yummy!

There is a problem with the chili, though. It is soooooo unphotogenic. It looks like dog throw-up.

Twi-crack post

I confess. I am addicted to Twi-crack and I highly recommend that you try some. My story started about a year ago. I was talking with a 13- year-old about school when her eyes suddenly glazed over and she said, as if in a trance, “Have you read Twilight?” I looked at her, puzzled by the random change of subject, and said that I had not read Twilight. She said, again trance-like, “You HAVE to read it. You HAVE to read Twilight.” I didn’t think much more about it until a few weeks ago. I finally finished Ken Follett’s Pillars of the Earth and World Without End, both excellent books. Upon finishing World Without End, I decided that I should read something silly and light and easy. I thought about the 13-year-old and decided that whatever she was reading would be perfect. That’s when I tried Twi-crack. I began reading on Wednesday. By the following Tuesday I had read Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn, AND the partially leaked internet book – Midnight Sun (Edward’s version of Twilight). PLUS, I am sad to say, that I watched the Twilight movie four times. The Twilight series is crack literature. That is why I am PSYCHED for November 20th because the New Dawn movie will be released. I’ll have to get there early so I can find a good seat amongst the hoards of teens that are also PSYCHED about November 20th. Twi-crack is sooooooo gooooood.

Do I even have to say it? Go team Edward.

Kitchens need accessory love, too!

I could write a witty introduction but I won’t. Who reads blogs anyway? Blogs are like Playboy. No one really reads them. People just want to see the pictures. So………

1. I don’t like to see a bunch of unused appliances out on the counter tops as decoration. Instead, I would rather see baskets, plants, cutting boards, and vintage tins for storage. Pack up that crusty old Cuisinart and put it behind closed doors. When was the last time you used it anyway? Donate it.

ps – The chopping block island is perfect as a kitchen table.

2. This kitchen is less accessorized, but it works because some of the upper cabinet doors are glass. I like the utensils and oils above the stove. I have that setup, too, and it is so handy. The toaster in the corner is ok as I am sure it gets action in the mornings and something like that needs to be convenient.

3. This kitchen is interesting because the cabinetry is very modern but they are juxtaposed against an industrial brick wall and accessorized with antiques. The balance is nice. The chalk board propped up on the counter is useful, too.

4. I like how the stuffed glass fronted cabinets are next to the simple glass jar on the capital pedestal. I also like how the coffee maker is inside it’s garage. Coffee makers are messy.

5. I like the large plants in the windows. They soften this otherwise sparse kitchen. I also love the wine storage on the left. It looks like a bottle dryer (similar ones can be found in NapaStyle catalog) propped up against the wall. Great idea!

6. This photo is from Coastal Living. Another sparse kitchen, but the tile wall makes up for it! I like this trend.

7. I love you, but I can’t live like this anymore. You’re just so vacant! It’s like nobody’s home. Oh, sorry, I was speaking to the kitchen. Obviously this person eats out a lot.

8. The next two photos are from La Dolce Vita. I am a sucker for glass fronted refrigerators. I just love them. This is a beautiful kitchen. I love the dark shades of gray. The counter tops are free from clutter but the cabinets and open shelving are packed with interesting dishes, etc.

9. Another tiled wall – like this. Open shelves – like. Accessories – LOVE! Herbs, cutting boards, utensils, cookbooks, toaster, microwave, canisters, all gooood!

10. This black and white floor is fabulous! It fills up the space so not as many accessories are required. I like the collection of wine jugs on the table.

11. Loooove the dark stained floors! This photo is from Cote de Texas – one of my favorite blogs. I’ve said this before – I love the light blue and red combination. WOW!

12. This chalkboard is a nice touch. Is it a door conversion? Not sure.

13. Great accessorizing here…topiaries, fruit on a tiered pedestal, vintage bread tin, glass cloche, upright mixer, and bottles of Pellegrino. Love the black cabinets, the white drum shades and the simple window treatment. Oh – and don’t forget the great rug!

14. First of all, the black framed windows and doors really make this space special. The chandeliers are perfect and the long wooden table is too fabulous! Notice how the cabinets are more modern with the long handles. Accessories – artichokes, upright mixer, flowers, art, and oils.

15. Another big trend – shelves instead of upper cabinets. Accessories – dishes and glassware, potted herbs, toaster, flowers, vintage tins, canisters, a bucket filled with green apples, and a little shelf (?). Not sure if it is a shelf, but it is so cute!

16. Another wooden kitchen table against a white backdrop AND more black framed doors! The chandelier and the sconce in this space are lovely. This could be accessorized for Christmas with all the red fruit on the table. Grandma’s old crystal and sterling are suddenly chic when grouped together.

17. This is a Southern Living kitchen. I included it because the accessories are more practical. The chips are stored in plain view on the island and it’s ok because they are in a decorative wooden basket. The dark shades on the windows balance out the dark shades of the island and the granite. The dog bed is cute and I would have no problem having it in the kitchen but I know a few germaphobes who would probably protest.

18. I like the LARGE accessories in this kitchen. The lemon tree in the urn is pretty and the basket of rosemary is also pretty. I know fake plants are a no-no but would it be bad to wire a couple of fake lemons on the lemon tree when the real ones drop?

19. Another pretty chandelier. I like the niches over the stove. They are perfect for small items like toothpicks and salt and pepper, etc. There is a sink in this kitchen table – nice.

20. Ok – this kitchen has the best accessory so far – the taxidermy hog. I need one of these. It would go well in my kitchen – not kidding. I’ll have to check eBay…

21. Gwenyth Paltrow’s kitchen – love the black cabinets and the chandeliers. I see a lot of appliances on the countertops. Accessories could be better – Gwen. I like the basket of veggies on the island. Those were probably thrown in for the photo shoot.

22. And finally, a Windsor Smith kitchen that has been all over the blogs. I loooooove this kitchen. I love the useful accessories. I love the marble topped table and the trellis chairs and the wingbacks. It’s just perfect. The vase of flowers is a pretty centerpiece and the black and white floors add a lot of visual weight to the mostly white room. Oh – I just noticed that the chairs have black vinyl cushions! Yummy!

It’s Still Summer in SoFlo! Outdoor images…

I know Labor Day has come and gone and, technically, one is not supposed to wear white after said day, but IT IS STILL SUMMER HERE! So, I am wearing white today and I am posting images of beautiful outdoor spaces.

I like pools surrounded by lots of landscaping and shade – like this one. I also like how the stepping stones go through the pool over to the sitting area.

The colors in this outdoor space are wonderful. Notice how they are all the same tone, just different colors. Orange…

Tan…Looks like there is a koi pond on one side and a spa on the other side.

I wish the cushions on my patio furniture were black like these. They would be so much easier to keep clean (looking). I like the black trim on the house – so much better than white.

The next two photos are from Celerie Kemble. I like her style because it closely matches my own.

I like how the old is mixed with the new. It looks layered and lived in.

I love this courtyard. I wonder if the fountain turns in to a spa? Love those vines.

More vines. The blue furniture, umbrellas, and trim really stand out against the green vines.

This is a pretty Vero Beach mansion that is for sale. It is a nice house but it needs vines. It’s too new and perfect. I do like the blue shutters, though. It probably looks funny in the day time because there doesn’t appear to be any mature landscaping. Stark.

Here we go…mature landscaping…love the fountain and the pops of red. This home was featured on Cote de Texas.

I would like to have one of these. I like the sound of water and fish are pretty. Someone should figure out how to market these pre-fabricated. Like a hot tub, but a koi pond that looks custom built.

This is what I would do with my pre-fab koi pond when I got tired of taking care of fish. I would use it as a planter.

France - Part 3

It's been a while since my last post. I am slowly getting caught up. France, Part 3...

We rented a van in Paris. That was brave because driving in Paris is difficult, especially in a giant Mercedes passenger van! The roads leaving Paris heading south are wonderful. We stayed on the country roads and avoided the huge highways as much as possible only because we wanted to really see the countryside and not just whiz by it.

This is an example of many of the roads that we travelled...lined with trees! Few fences, just fields.

Look how even the town bridge is decorated with hanging baskets! The French take so much pride in their villages and towns. Every little village that we drove through was landscaped with flowers!

I didn't pass up many opportunities to eat goodies. Yum!

We stayed in the Burgundy region for a few nights at a place called Castel de Tres Girards in Morey St. Denis. It was wonderful! Click on the link and see more photos. I would definitely go back to this place.

We travelled from there to the Annecy area and stayed at Chateau des Avenieres in the French Alpes. This is another place that I would reccommend to anyone travelling in the area. The food was fabulous and the grounds were beautiful. I went hiking one day in the woods and marvelled at how pretty the property was. The road up to the hotel was very scary, though. I do not enjoy driving on mountain roads especially where there are few guard rails.

We stayed in two different rooms here. One night was in the Sonate room which was a former music room. This photo does not do it justice. First of all, it was HUGE. The wood paneled walls were lovely and the bathroom was large and luxurious. From the balcony, we could see Mont Blanc (Switzerland).

Breakfast was served on the terrace.

We stayed a second night in the "white" room. They call it the white room because it is white. This room also had a large balcony and bathroom.

We went to Grignan after the leaving the Alpes and stayed here a while. Grignan is a beautiful walled town. It is surrounded by fields of lavander.

The countryside in this area is more arid and reminds me of New Mexico. The annual Festival de Correspondance was happening in Grignan while we were there. There were many stalls offering antique books. It was really neat.

While in Grignan, we stayed at Manoir de la Roseraie. The property boasts hundreds of rose bushes. This place has a pool and a restaurant and beautiful grounds. The rooms here are huge and the bathrooms are nice.

Nice was our final destination. It wasn't really what I was expecting. I probably won't visit there again. It was big and dirty and there were many pickpockets. I was warned a few times by various people to watch my valuables at all times. One of the good things about Nice is that you can do cool things like jump off a cliff into the sea.

The beach consists of rocks of various sizes. Warning - wear shoes to the beach in Nice! The rocks get really hot and are difficult to walk on. The water was wonderful - the perfect temperature and few waves. We stayed at Beau Rivage which was a nice place - very modern. This particular hotel has a wonderful beach area with lounge chairs, a restaurant, etc. We saw the Tour de France come through Nice. It was very exciting!

Cannes is prettier than Nice, in my opinion. It is much cleaner. The shops here are wonderful and the people are super friendly. Actually, the people of France are friendly everywhere. Only once did we run in to anyone unfriendly and that was a very busy waiter in Paris who could not tolerate any questions regarding the menu. Maybe he was just having a bad day.

I love France. I cannot wait to go back and explore the western region of this beautiful country. Until then, au revoir!

Winter Park Rendezvous

Oh - good grief! Blogger is really frustrating. I have collected so many great real estate photos of Winter Park and I am unable to get them in order because of this ridiculous program! I'll try to make sense of it all...

I spent the last week with my mom. We ended the visit in the Orlando area as my step-dad had a meeting in Orlando and I ended up travelling there to spend more time with her while he was in his meeting. We spent the day in lovely Winter Park. Winter Park is located north of Orlando, just east of I-4.

Winter Park was founded as a resort destination by wealthy New England industrialists before the turn of the 20th century. It really has a small town feel even though it is right on the edge of Orlando. The population is about 28,000. There is more park space per capita here than any other city in Florida.

Winter Park is built around a chain of lakes that are connected by narrow canals. The lakes are only 10 to 15 feet deep - perfect for sculling and water skiing. Many of the streets are brick and lined with huge Live Oak trees draped in Spanish Moss. Winter Park is the home of Rollins College - a small, liberal arts, private, college with a very high price tag. Winter Park is also the home of the world's largest collection of Tiffany glass housed at the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art.

If you ever get to this area, you MUST take a boat tour. The tour guides were knowledgeable and the tour afforded us a great view of the gorgeous homes in this area. We took a tour and travelled from lake to lake through the narrow canals. It was really neat!

Je t'aime Paris!

Oh gosh, I have been neglecting my blog! This post is about the Paris portion of our summer trip. Paris is beautiful to say the least. It is also different than any other city on Earth. It is obvious that beauty is a high priority in the French culture. In Paris, some sort of beauty is everywhere. The buildings, the trees, the monuments, the people, the food, the street performers, the art, the flowers - they are all beautiful in different ways.

We drove down the Champs Elysees and saw the Arc de Triomphe. The traffic was horrendous but it was worth it because the Arc is so large and impressive. It was built in 1836 during the reign of Louis Philippe. Since 1920, it houses the tomb of France's Unknown Soldier and commemorates the dead of World Wars I and II. It is really breathtakingly beautiful. It brought tears to my eyes!

We visited the Louvre, of course. We even took naps in the lawn just outside.

We saw the Mona Lisa. There were so many other people also visiting the Mona Lisa - WOW!

We saw the Venus de Milo, too. She was created sometime between 130 and 100 BC and is believed to depict the Greek goddess, Aphrodite (the goddess of love and beauty).

We took a train to the Chateau de Versailles. Days could be spent here exploring the gardens. It was a little eerie touring the chateau because I kept thinking of the mob of people invading the palace during the Revolution. I was also amazed at the access given to the hoards of people touring the building. I wish I could have toured the kitchen area and the work rooms, etc.

How strange that the Treaty of Versailles was signed here in the Hall of Mirrors ending World War I? The history associated with this place is mind boggling.

The Chapel....

We stayed at Hotel du Louvre which was really nice, right in the heart of things.

Isn't the bar beautiful?

The lobby is also very pretty.

We visited the Paris Catacombs. There are over 1 million people's bones in this particular catacomb. Over 6 million Parisians are in all the catacombs!

The Seine...so pretty!

I love the art installations around the city.

We ate at a neat little restaurant called Quai Quai on the Ile de la Citi. The food was fabulous and the service was excellent.

Sidewalk street performers...

We climbed the stairs to the top of the Eiffel Tower. The lines were too long to wait for an elevator! The Eiffel Tower itself is way more beautiful than I thought it would be. It is amazing how much thought went into making the structure beautiful. It is more than just a tower.

Me at the Jardins du Palais-Royal. There was a group of men playing boule on the other side of the trees. It was so neat and relaxed and enjoyed by many.

London Highlights...

I am back from London and France. We had a great time! I am posting just a few photos from the London portion of the trip.

We only spent five days in London but covered a lot of ground!

The streets were clean and beautiful.

The street signs were very polite, too!

We rode the London Eye the first day. It offered a bird's eye view of the city.

We visited the National War Museum one afternoon.

It is very interesting. I would definitely recommend this to anyone visiting London.

There was a neat exhibit featuring a complete home from WWII

with all original furniture, groceries, etc. that showed how people

lived during the war -

always waiting for a bomb.

I saw lots of "KEEP CALM - CARRY ON"

posters.

The London Tower was cool. We saw the Crown jewels. Of course, I was drawn to these bright blue doors next to the dark brick - so smart!

The weather was beautiful, cool, and clear.

We walked through Kensington Park and Hyde Park.

It was wonderful!

There were off-leash dogs everywhere - all so well behaved!

The flowers were beautiful. It was definitely the most beautiful park I have ever seen.

We went to the Portobello Street Market one day. There was so much to see! Antiques, clothing, food, fruit, flowers, musicians, street performers!

I ate this yummy tart and did a lot of people watching.

We went to a wonderful market in Greenwich, too.

It was really fabulous because there were booths with handmade items, one of a kind clothing, food, and even a psychic/stylist that could update your look

and

tell you about your future at the same time!

I didn't visit that booth because I was too afraid of what he might say about both

my future and my fashion!

Isn't this funny?

I wonder how many knives it collected?

Vignettes and Random Spaces

I'm organizing my images again - making room for inspiration! This little vignette would be simple to re-create. Formula:

Nice spot to stash your keys, mail drop, great place to store gloves, scarves, dog leashes, flashlights, etc. in the chest of drawers, and a nice welcoming spot for you and your guests.

The art of arrangement really stands out in this vignette.

I like the idea board in this office space.

I really like this chandelier. The straw bags filled with straw hats is a cool idea. Near a pool or in a bathroom you could use the same idea but filled with fluffy white towels instead.

I like this foyer. The chair and the pillow add the perfect pop of color against all the neutrals.

Perfect symmetry - but not boring. Blue and brown are so pretty together.

This Nate Berkus space is masculine but still pretty.

I saved this one because I love to see wonderful jewelry on display. I can't tell what the necklaces are displayed in - is that glass or plexi-glass? You could create a similar look using a glass candlestick inside a glass hurricane candle holder. The necklaces could be draped around a short candle and dangle down the side of the candlestick. The bracelets could stack over another glass candlestick. The mirrored countertop makes everthing sparkle.

For all you folks in apartments, this one's for you. These floating shelves (or rails) are in every catalog and even Target. They are great for diplaying photos, art, and small objects. They are simple to hang, simple to move, and give a lot of visual punch. Easy.

Another punch-y idea...these bright orange shelves give big impact for little money. Paint what already have bright orange or bright turquoise or bright yellow OR order similar shelves from West Elm or Z Gallerie. I've seen them there.

The next two photos have been everywhere on the net. The color combo is pretty and the whole look is an easy copy.

In this photo the walls and furniture are blue and the floor is brown but it's still just as appealing. The touch of zebra helps, too.

I like the large mirror in this foyer. Actually, I like everything in this foyer. I like how they hung the picture over the mirror - using it as a sort of picture railing.

Windsor Overdose

Windsor Home for Sale

The village of Windsor is one of my favorite communities in the Vero Beach area. It is located on the barrier island between the Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean. The village offers a beautiful club facility, golfing, polo, stables, a playground, an art gallery, fitness facilities and even a beautiful church.

Most of the homes were built as winter homes for "snowbirds" from all over the United States, Canada, Europe, and South America. The home that is featured in this post was designed by Hugh Newell Jacobsen and built in 1996. The home is 10,708 square feet and features 5 bedrooms and 6 full baths and 3 powder rooms. It is listed at $7,700,000. It was built to maximize breezes and keep air circulating with its many full size windows.

The front of the home definitely has a beach-y feel to it.

Dining room...

While it is not exactly my taste, it does appeal to me because the decorating is very simple and un-fussy. I can see how it would be very relaxing as a vacation home.

I love the blue ceiling in this hallway. It looks like a pool of water overhead. The ceiling in this room is also very beautiful.

This appears to be an outdoor lounge area. Is there glass above the wooden ceiling or is it open?

Aahh - so this is the room that opens out into the pool! How cool!

Another long hallway with a beautiful blue ceiling. It looks kind of shiny. Could it be Venetian plaster?

Too bad these were all the photos that were posted on the listing. I would love to see the kitchen, the bedrooms, and the bathrooms!

Riomar House for Sale

I have long admired this home because it is one of the original vacation homes built in my area. It was built in 1930 in a neighborhood known as old Riomar. Riomar lies near the ocean in Vero Beach. This home is a short walk from the beach.

The home is 5300 square feet and is situated on a 1.5 acre lot. It stands in near original condition.

The view from the front is of the Riomar Country Club golf course.

Isn't this a neat little fountain? It looks like one of the "dog bars" in Palm Beach.

The home was used as a family lodge for many years. This is a shot of the dining room.

It wouldn't take much to bring this home back to its former glory.

I love the curved doors and the beamed ceilings and the unique tile floors.

This is one of the 10 bedrooms. There are 6 bathrooms as well. Again, a beautiful curved door and more beamed ceilings.

My favorite part - the kitchen - with its original sink! I loooove it! I could make this kitchen fabulous.

The home has two fireplaces, a three car garage, and an elevator. It is listed for $2,995,000.

I wish I could find more photos of the home. I would love to see the rest of it!

Inspiring Living Rooms

This post is all about living rooms.

This photo is from HGTV.com . I like the color on the walls. I also like the large scale items on the coffee table. Everything is too new, though. I would like to see some antiques mixed in somewhere.

Blogger is driving me crazy - not working right. Text not in right spot. Ughhhhhh.....

Anyway, I like the dark, patched cowhide rug in this room. The horseshoe coffee table is cool mixed with the fancy elements in the room. The furniture looks really uncomfortable, though.

I love the windows in this room and the gleaming hardwood floors. There is another cowhide rug in this room. The couch looks usable and comfy.

I love the column in the corner and the black accents in this room. There is just enough black to anchor the room. It is a little sparse, IMO.

I like dark walls. The tall winged chair is beautiful. The simple shades work in this room because the book cases are probably busy. Photo via Nate Berkus.

This room was featured on La Dolce Vita not long ago. I love the dark gray couch and the black lampshade. There is another lucite table in this room. They look great with pattern beneath them.

This image was found on local designer, Rod Mickley's website. I love the color combination in this room. The blue glass on the mantel are like little exclamation points. Of course, I like the touch of zebra as well.

The next six photos are from Cote de Texas. The heavy darks and lights in the first photo feel good to me. I loooove this room. The only thing I don't like is the little lonely light fixture. The dark mouldings are beautiful.

The combination of light blue and orange-y red is so pretty here. I will be painting my dining room this color soon. Can't wait! Love the black painted door, too.

Gosh, this is a pretty room. The light fixture is perfect. There is something that really bothers me, though. In so many magazines and design blogs, I see libraries with staged books. I really read. I have hundreds of books that I am not willing to part with. I would like to see a library with "real" books. Some people cover theirs in paper to get that uniform look. I'm not sure how I feel about that. It's a little weird, IMO.

Yummy Outdoor Spaces

I am so glad that warm weather is finally here! It seems like it has been the looooongest winter. I know, I am spoiled, because winter is hardly winter in Florida. But still, it has been cooler than usual, I think.

These images of outdoor spaces are so inspiring to me. There are do-able ideas in every photo. I love the awning and drapes in this photo. Look how they painted the wicker wing chairs two different colors. The stripe of white along the top pulls from the white on the seat cover. This setting looks so inviting.

Gorgeous...A handy person could easily copy this cabana. The construction looks simple. Notice how there is space between each wooden slat, this allows for air flow. A cabana like this wouldn't have to go near a pool. It could go out in a pretty yard, sans the pool, for just a nice place to relax or take a nap. Also notice how the groups of lounges are placed close together instead of spread out. Together, they make a statement.

What a neat mural in the background! By painting the planters bright blue, it gives this area a WOW factor. Elevating them on the rough, wooden pedestals also adds drama.

I wonder if this could be re-created using a ready made tent? Probably. The stripes are the key to this look. They lend a yacht-y feel. Lanterns like these are all over eBay. The round tables counter all the lines in the space and echo the round lanterns above. It's all about balance.

Another photo pulled from Cote de Texas... What makes this spot so great? The HUGE palms. This photo would have fallen flat had there been two dinky plants flanking the settee. The visual weight of the plants balance the busy-ness of the tiles, etc. They act as ANCHORS. I am a believer in LARGE plants, indoors and out. If you can't afford large plants, at least group your small ones together. Nothing is worse than a lone, little plant. Another idea from this photo is the way they draped the blanket over the center of the settee. If they had not done so, there would have been too much white in the settee and it would have competed with the white walls. The blanket breaks up the white.

OK - there are no huge plants in this space, but they DID group the small ones together to create visual weight. My point exactly. Notice how the tile top of the table pulls all the colors from the flowers and the pillows on the bench. If the table had been all white, there would have been an imbalance in the space. If you can't do a tile table top, why not fake it with paint?

This outdoor spot is serene and clean. Again, the Moravian star lighting can easily be found on eBay and is not that expensive. The wood trellis is an easy project. It echoes the color of the teak furniture. There is a pattern here, BALANCE. Side note - I have teak furniture around my pool and it is a BITCH to keep up. Unless you enjoy cleaning and oiling, stay away from teak. I have decided to let mine go gray - Hampton's style.

This looks more like the color of my teak at the moment. I love this large table. It looks very user friendly. Keep in mind, though, that the reason this table works is that there is plenty of green in the background. If the table sat on white concrete with little landscaping around it, the glaring, white would blind you.

The simple trellis in this photo is definitely a DIY project. It works against the heavily wooded background. Outdoor, propylene rugs, like this one, are a great invention. They are inexpensive and beautiful.

WOW - this furniture is gorgeous! The structure is simple, yet the furniture is very ornate and it works. It appears that the inside of the loggia is painted a light blue - SO PRETTY!

Big impact can be made in small spaces. The HUGE plants soften the corners in this space.

Concrete floor? Paint it! Concrete is easy to paint. This pattern looks simple. Tape it off and start rolling! Just be sure to choose subdued colors so as not to make the floor the main attraction. If it becomes the main attraction, all of your painting flaws will be center stage.

The bright colors work in this photo because every thing else in the space is white and subdued. The only color comes from the green painted, glass doors, the large plants in the corner, the pillows, and the furniture. I love using fabric curtain panels outdoors. An inexpensive alternative to custom , outdoor panels is to buy ready made, white panels from Pottery Barn. I washed mine before installing them because they shrink when washed. Now when they get dingy, mildew-y, or dirty I can throw them in the wash with a little bleach and they come out like new.

All of these outdoor rooms have something in common, they are INVITING! They make you want to go outside and enjoy the fresh air instead of plopping in front of the television. Make your outdoor space a place for YOU to enjoy, don't save it just for entertaining. Have breakfast out there, sort the mail out there, talk on the phone out there, do WHATEVER out there, just get out there and enjoy!

Dining Room Inspiration

I love the painted floor in this dining space. The black and white pattern makes the wood of the table and chairs stand out. The chandelier is also very beautiful and perfectly fits the mood.

I saved this one because I love the combination of the dusky blue and the rich green. The silver ceiling is gorgeous and really finishes the room. I love the chandelier in this room, too. The light colored rug would not last long in my house, though. Maybe it is not a rug? Maybe it is painted or some kind of engineered flooring? I'm not sure.

This dining area appears to be part of a larger area, maybe a large living room? I like the light, airiness of the room but I don't think I would really enjoy eating in this area. It feels like there should be someone waiting tables in this room. There is too much empty space IMO.

This little eating spot is so cute. Another easy-to-create look - all from Ikea. The candelabras on the mantel in the background are gorgeous. Notice the fireplace, too. They inserted mirror and covered the hearth with candles. I bet when this is lit at night, the effect is dramatic. What a great way to treat a fireplace in the summer!

HGTV Green Home 2009

HGTV's 2009 Green Home is located in Port St. Lucie, Florida, which is not too far from where I live. The home features green products, design, and outdoor spaces. Check out these photos from HGTV's website.

The exterior of the home features native, low maintenance, and drought tolerant landscaping. The home has wide overhangs for optimal cooling. On the website there are photos of the vegetable garden in the back yard along with the compost and the rainwater collection systems.

I like how they showcased this pop of color in the foyer.

The dining area is open to the living room and also opens up to the back porch.

I like the color combination in this lounge area. The orange really pops against the dark cabinets. There are two beverage refrigerators on either end of the long cabinet. This area could definitely be used as a bar for entertaining.
I love the huge bird print as well as the large planters. The scale of this room is nice.

This area is located on the back side of the foyer wall. Through the door is the master bedroom. This room doesn't do much for me. I do like the matching mirrors and tables in the background, though.

I like the wall of tile in the kitchen and the long, dark cabinets.

I like the hood above the stove. It makes the less expensive appliances look beefier. I would rather have seen a glass top range with a separate built in oven below. I found out not long ago that, overall, electric ranges are more energy efficient than gas. That is probably why they chose to use electric appliances instead of gas in this "green" home.

I noticed a neat design trick. Look at the door to the pantry. See how they added a false transom to the top of it to make it seem taller? It looks more substantial than a simple door. Now, go back to the dining room photos. They did the same thing on the sliding doors.

Nice colors in the guest room. I like the fabric covered bedside tables. All kinds of things can be hidden behind the fabric. The glass on top protects the fabric from stains. This is a low cost decorating idea.
The child's room is bright and cheery and TINY! Cute bed, but I hope she doesn't have plans for sleepovers...

The children's bathroom is nice. I like more mirror space, though. Maybe it would have been better to place this mirror on top of a mirrored wall?

I like the lines of tile in the bathtub/shower area and the super, soft pink walls.

This bathroom is the hall bathroom. I love the tiled wall. Since this bathroom will be used more as a powder room, the small mirror doesn't really matter. I like the brown and blue combination.

This is the sitting room. I heard on the news this morning that there are over a million alligators in Florida. Because of the drought, they are more active than usual right now, so dog walkers and joggers - BEWARE!! I digress...

Anyhoo- nice gator prints on the wall.

The master bedroom is soothing in soft blue and the turquoise keeps it from being boring. I like how they swept the drapery panels to either side of the windows.

There are identical mirrors flanking both sides of the door leading to the master bath. Notice the door trick again!

Bedrooms - Light and Dark

I was looking through my files of bedroom images and noticed that they all gravitate toward light and dark. Not many are middle of the road. Most are high contrasts. This mixture seems the most comfortable for me.

Even though this is a small room, the dark walls with the thick white mouldings and the touch of sparkle in the chandelier make the room seem ample.

Now, swap out the dark walls for a dark bedspread and black lampshades and you get the same result.

This room is very similar to the first room. The bed in this room is white and there is more light entering the space through the windows and doors. This is a larger room, too.

There is some contrast going on in this room, but not quite enough, IMO. I would probably not sleep well in this room. I would paint at least one wall a contrasting color.

I don't love the proportions in this room, but I love the dark (is it black?) wall. I would sleep well in this room but I would want to change the proportions of the furniture and the objects on the wall. Ilove the mirrors, just not floating where they are. Plus, I like to have a headboard.

Another view of the same room...the fireplace in the corner is so beautiful.

More super dark walls (and ceiling)...The white tufted bed, the white bedside tables, and the white lampshades pop against the dark walls and ceiling. Check out the white chandelier in the mirror, too. Perfect!

The photo on the right shows a bedroom with softer contrast. This would be a nice guest room.

Another beautiful, soft contrast room...The soft orange chair and the soft turquoise desk are nice compliments to the high contrast drapes. Very nice.

This bedroom was featured on Cote de Texas a few weeks ago. I LOVE the color in this room. Even though the walls are light, there is high contrast going on with the draperies, the headboard, and the dark furniture. I LOVE THIS ROOM. (The only thing I don't like is the teeny tiny light fixture.) In fact, this whole post is one of my favorites. Check it out if you haven't already.

This room is too soft for me. Plus, I think loads of books in bedrooms are a bad idea. Books attract and hold DUST. I would have an asthma/allergy attack in this room. The bookshelves are lovely to gaze upon but not practical for me. I love the large window in this room, but I would like to see some dark color on the walls.

Aahhh...I love this room. I love the wall color. I love the cactus lamp. I love the crisp, white linens. I love the fur throw. I love the simple leather chair. I love the black lampshade. I love the useful bedside table. AND I love the marble topped dresser. A+

Ben Folds Concert

Tomorrow is my birthday and we celebrated by going to see Ben Folds in concert. He played at Florida Atlantic University last night and the show was AWESOME! He played most of the songs from his recent albun, Way to Normal, along with many of the songs that made him famous like Rockin' the Suburbs and Landed.

It was too much fun. We ate at Chops Lobster Bar before the show. The food was fantastic. I ate the best salmon that I have ever had in my life. It was so tender that it felt like chewing on air in my mouth.

We stayed at the Boca Resort .
PLEASE check out the website because the decor of this hotel is so beautiful. I could not figure out how to copy the photos because they are in a slide show so please see the website of this Mizner gem. It turns out that Ben Folds was staying at the hotel as well!

Weekend Getaway

Instead of taking a big vacation during Spring Break, we spent a long weekend in Miami and Palm Beach. We stayed the first two nights at the Fontainebleau in Miami Beach. Check out their website at Fontainebleau.com . This hotel recently underwent a massive BILLION dollar renovation. It is currently Miami's hotspot. I spied Russell Simmons hanging by the pool. Despite all of this, we will not be staying at this hotel again. Too big, too glitzy, too much show, and not enough service.

While in Miami, we ate at Maison d'Azur at the historic Astor Hotel. It was wonderful!!! Next time we go to Miami, I definitely want to stay at this hotel. It was small, quaint, and stylish. The French cuisine was mouth watering. Excellent.

We shopped at Bal Harbour shops...tres chic! We saw several women shopping with their fancy little dogs in tow. It was funny seeing a miniature Pinscher sitting on a sofa in the shoe salon at Neiman Marcus. What happens when the dog needs to go poo poo? Who is in charge of this? Does the owner bag it or just leave it for someone else?

Koi fish are beautiful but they kind of gross me out at the same time.

A very lucky turtle...

On the way home, we stopped in Palm Beach for the day and spent the night at The Colony on Worth Avenue. It is also a historic hotel with European flavor - small, quaint, beautiful.

This pool was waaaaay more relaxing than the mega-pool at Fontainebleau!

We ate dinner at Cafe Boulud at the Brazilian Court Hotel (another favorite hotel). Gorgeous!

Lesson learned - less is often more. Good day!

Better late than never...

1. This is a photo of my dresser and where I store and display my jewelry. I have found that if I keep my things where they are easily accessible that they will be worn more often. This is one of my goals this year, to wear and enjoy what I have and buy less.

It is really difficult to photograph shiny objects.

I draped the long necklaces and concha belts over the mirror for easy access.

These little silver candy dishes and compotes make excellent jewelry storage.

The coral branch is another good idea for bracelet display.

I found this one, too. It is good because it provides elevation.

This blue Opaline dish and silver basket is gorgeous.

Another good one for elevation...you may even have one of these already in your china cabinet?

I am in love with blue Opaline. This ashtray is perfect for earrings.

4. I do not know where I found this photo, maybe Country Living? Anyway, it is neat how they grouped together the vintage bird pictures.

5. I really like this bedroom. The colors are peaceful. The bed looks like it would be easy to make up every day. Nice.

I found this ornate mirror on eBay. It is not as large as the one in the photo but it would do until a larger one was found.

These small, vintage, crystal chandeliers are pretty easy to find. This one is on eBay.

Throw in this vintage Louis Vuitton carry-all and the look is complete.

School Art Projects

I have been busy working on two art projects for a local private school. The projects are to be auctioned off at the annual fundraiser. This year's theme is "Under the Sea" so the projects are both ocean related.

The first project was created by the 3rd grade students and is a pop art, shell study. Each of the three classes completed one study. I found renderings of the shells on a website called Karen's Whimsy. The renderings are public domain. I grouped the shells together and had them printed on thick parchment type paper. The students colored their chosen shells using watercolor pencils. Easy enough.

My favorite of the three...

This one features mollusks - starfish, octopus, jellyfish, and sea flowers.

A close-up of my favorite... I wrote each student's name by their shell so that later they could look at it and say, "I did that one!"

The second project is a painting created by the 5th grade students. This is my favorite of all the projects I have facilitated at the school over the years. It is a sailfish. I like the way it lights up just like a real sailfish does when it is feeding. Take a look...

It feels so good helping out the school in this way. I am proud of how the projects turned out and can't wait to attend the big event!

Another busy week...

1. I saw this photo in this month's issue of Elle Decor and fell in love with this bathroom. I love the marble walls and the huge paned window looking out into the garden. I also love the little mirror next to the tub.

I found this antique rococo mirror on eBay. It would be perfect near my tub.

2. I did not find anything like this Black Forest chandelier in any magazine. Isn't is neat? I have never seen this before.

3. I did find this beautiful chandelier on Point Click Home. I like the little shots of blue on the all white background.

This is a similar antique Opaline chandelier. What a beautiful color!
I found these antique Opaline sconces, too.

4. These Opaline wine glasses are so beautiful and would pretty up any table setting. I think they would look great with a variety of dishes.

5. This photo is from Elle Decor, too. Look closely at the wire chairs in the foreground.
I know these 1950's Eames wire chairs are not exactly the same, but they translate for an overall look.

6. Another photo from Elle Decor...check out the obelisks on the table.

7. I like the mirrored tables in the next two photos (Point Click Home).

But this antique mirrored table on eBay is even prettier. The oriental design makes it more unique.

8. I searched Miriam Haskell vintage jewelry and saw these three necklaces on the first page. Since this week has featured "fancy" eBay items, I thought these went along with the theme. I see why people get obsessed with MH, there is soooooo much out there and it is so UNIQUE.

Rock City Nursery

I went to Rock City Nursery in Wabasso this past weekend. I discovered that they have fairy gardens! Check this one out...

I looove this cast concrete armchair. There was even a matching ottoman with concrete tufting and buttons!

I bought a few plants to freshen up my garden.

I am super busy this week with a few art projects that I am doing for a local school. I will show you the finished projects hopefully next week.

2. Aren't these inlaid chairs gorgeous?

This set of Egyptian inlaid chairs are just as pretty.

Notice how similar chairs are used in this seating area. I like how they hung the chandelier just behind the couch. I also like how the room isn't centered around the fireplace.

4. Victorian bamboo and antique bamboo pieces have really escalated in value. I like this bamboo chair.

This piece would be useful in a bathroom.

I was looking for an antique bamboo bookshelf like this one but couldn't find one at this time. I have one in my powder room.

5. This sliding chalkboard would be great in a kitchen as a pantry door or in a child's room as a closet door.

1. I found some lovely butterfly collections on eBay this week.

I was inspired by a photo of Kate Spade's kitchen. She has two framed butterfly collections hanging above the banquette.

2. I was browsing an eBay store called Capital Salvage when I found this table made from reclaimed columns and wood. I love it!

I had saved this photo several months ago. It features a similar table!

3. This shell encrusted mirror is especially pretty because of the blue coral that was used on the top and bottom.

4. A pair of oak Hollywood regency tables...nice.

5 . This is a pretty gilded lily table.

6. I have always liked elephant garden stools.

7. This vintage bronze easel would elevate the status of any framed photo or small painting.

8. This is a beautiful pair of baroque candlesticks.

First Paintings!

After three painting classes with master painter, Ros Farbush, I have finished two paintings. (I ended up painting over my first painting.) Keep in mind that the only art lessons I have had were back in 5th grade, so I am very proud of these two paintings. Both buildings are local landmarks.

Ros is teaching me to paint quickly so that I will paint more freely and less controlled. Each painting was complete within the four hour "class" period. We painted on site which made it even more enjoyable. I can't wait for my next class. We will be painting on the beach!

Ooooh, it has been a short week. I have not had time for another post other than this one this week. My art classes suck up huge chunks of time and then I have to get my regular chores done, so my schedule is off track. Oh well, I DID have time to scout out a few things on eBay.

1. I love these antique garden gates. They would look great on a big blank patio wall or used as actual gates. I like the color, too.

2. These antique columns are wonderful. They could be displayed indoors or out.

3. This little wooden capital is perfect for display or as a riser on a tablescape.

Another gorgeous architectural piece with endless possibilities...

4. I like this Mexican retalbo. The colors are beautiful.

5. This marble top antique table is versatile and useful.

A more modern marble top table...

This antique, marble top table could be used as an island in a small kitchen.

My mom uses one in her kitchen for serving as well as extra counter space.

6. I like this brass coat rack. It would be perfect in a mudroom for coats or a bathroom for towels.

7. Ever since I found my vintage concrete foo dogs, I have been looking for more vintage statuary. I found this vintage garden statue...

as well as this foo dog statue.

8. A metal finial...great in the garden, patio, or inside the house.

9. This toleware fountain is nice and would go with my collection. I could hang it in my kitchen and use it for apple and orange storage.

10. This seahorse fountain is beautiful.

11. I would like to have a real water fountain somewhere in my home. No more glass washing, cold water would always be available, no more disposable water cooler cups. How handy! I would put it on my back porch or in my laundry room near the garage.
